The Power of Flight

Today in science we explored, and learned, about flight and how such massive planes can take to the skies!  We looked at the aerofoil shape common to the wings of plane and birds and the effect this shape has on the air around it – air flows faster over the top and slower underneath. Bernoulli’s Principle states that fast moving air equals low air pressure while slow moving air equals high air pressure. The high air pressure underneath the wings will therefore push the aircraft up through the lower air pressure.  Why not demonstrate Bernoulli’s Principle to everyone at home with your favourite chocolatey snack!

Fractions!!!

We’ve been working on fractions in maths and it wouldn’t hurt to do a little extra! Have a go at these using the steps and strategies we’ve been working on in class…

Simplify the following:

35/50     40/80     14/21      32/80     49/70

Put these in order staring with the smallest:

1 5/12  2 2/3  1 1/2    1 1/3    2 7/12

Change these mixed numbers into improper fractions:

2 4/5   5 2/9   4 5/7  8 1/2  6 7/10  3 7/20

Change these improper fractions into mixed numbers:

16/3  24/5  19/8  43/7  99/10  53/12

Pop your answers down on a piece of paper and bring it with you tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Science Friday!

On Friday we delved into the world of science with a couple of excellent experiments.  One of them looked at the energy transfer between a basketball and a tennis ball with dramatic results whilst the other involved spinning a bucket containing water above our heads without getting wet! This was possible due to something called centripetal force.  Given that I was first to demonstrate I think many in the class were hoping such a force didn’t exist!!!  However we demonstrated that it does indeed and after a while we were all keen to have a go.  Why not find a bucket and demonstrate the power of centripetal force at home?

Eco Day

In addition to Miss Dunbar’s post each class is designing an ‘eco outfit’ to be showcased on the catwalk on Eco Day.  I asked everyone last week to have a look for any recycling materials we might be able to use plus old articles of clothing we bring back to life.  Any and all items would be much appreciated!

Eco Day – 27th April

CROWN PRIMARY SCHOOL

The 27th of April is Eco Day at Crown Primary.  We would like the children and staff to come dressed in the colours of the rainbow.  You could pick out one colour or dress in them all!

During the day there will be opportunities for classes to take part in planting, litter clearing and learning outdoors.  We will have a picnic lunch and it you want to join in with this bring a packed lunch or let the kitchen know you would like a picnic lunch on this day.  (There will not be the usual choices for school dinners for this day.)  Bring in your picnic blanket and teddy bear and join in the fun.  Lunch will be outdoors if the weather stays fine.

At lunch time there will be a range of stalls:

  • popcorn / healthy snacks – 20p
  • smoothies – 50p

Rock Challenge – What a day . . .

What a day our Rock Challenge group had at Eden Court today. Between rehearsing and performing on the Empire Theatre stage, getting our hair (thank you Inverness College UHI) and make-up (thank you to our wonderful parent and teacher volunteers) done, operating the technical equipment and attending some great workshops, the highlight had to be seeing the smiles of all of the performers, stage crew, tech crew and teachers following the performance.
